Fremantle Leisure Center City adopts $100m budget for 2013–14

Council has adopted the first ever $100m budget for the city which includes $5m on the Fremantle Leisure Centre upgrade, $1.6m on the Esplanade Youth Plaza and between $2.5m and $3.5m being invested on heritage buildings.

Freo 2029 Fremantle 2029: next workshop

Invite your friends and family to the next community visioning workshop which asks "what are our visions for Fremantle?”  This workshop (number 3 in the series) will be run twice – a Thursday evening and a Saturday afternoon session.

Workshop 3.1 will be held on Thursday 22 August from 5.30 pm at the Fremantle Italian Club and the identical workshop repeated as workshop 3.2 (family and youth friendly) will be held Saturday 24 August, from 12.30 pm at the North Fremantle Bowling Club.

Youth Plaza Youth plaza final design released!

The highly anticipated final design of Fremantle's $1.6m Esplanade Youth Plaza has been released, with construction of the world-class multipurpose youth facility to begin later this year.

Weed control program Upcoming weed control program

Weed spraying will be ongoing between August and September at Bathers Beach, Booyeembara Park, Cantonment Hill, Leighton Beach, North Fremantle Foreshore, South Beach and Samson Park. Contact the parks and landscape team on 08 9432 9999 for more information.

South American style food Empty spaces no more!

As part of the efforts to revitalise empty and under–utilised spaces, the City will be rolling out these two initiatives:

MYRE project
The City has commissioned Spacemarket to bring immediate commercial activity to the old Myer building at Kings Square. Spacemarket is looking to create a place of unique pop–up style retails and public activity. Visit the Spacemarket Facebook page.

Unique food vehicles

Food vehicles selling culturally unique, healthy, fresh and reasonably priced food will be travelling around, stopping at places such as the Esplanade Reserve, Booyeembara Park, Leighton Beach and other areas within Fremantle, South Fremantle, White Gum Valley, Beaconsfield and O'Connor.

Comida Do Sul (South American style food), Pizza Queens/Two Queens (pizza and tapas) and Higher Grounds (coffee and fruit slice snacks) will be the first of more to come. Visit the environmental health food page.

Business plan Corporate business plan now available

Council adopted the City of Fremantle Corporate Business Plan 2013–17 at the Wednesday 24 July 2013 ordinary council meeting and it is now available on the strategic and key documents page.

Free activities

It's never too late to try something new!

The City has a range of free activities for over 55's until September including art, ballroom dancing, Living Smart Courses, knitting and movie days.

Lighting Trail and lighting upgrade at Arthur Head

As a part of the Arthur Head activation project, the City is currently undertaking works to upgrade trails and lighting to the area. A limestone footpath is expected to finish this month.

Toy library Toy Library not just for kids!

The Fremantle Toy Library does more than just lend toys to 0-6 year olds; it's also an outpost of the Fremantle City Library! Return your library books, request titles for collection in Hilton or browse the free internet, the library's online catalogue or online databases.

You can also hire a costume and book party hire equipment for your child's party. Open 9.00 am– 2.00 pm Monday and Friday and 9.00 am–4.30 pm Tuesday and Thursday.

Essex street Essex Street road repairs

Council has approved works to repair parts of Essex Street damaged by the root systems of trees located along the street. The community will have an opportunity to comment before the project begins. Check the community engagement page.

Leaders Luncheon Leaders Luncheon – August

The City of Fremantle and Fremantle Chamber of commerce invites you to the next Leaders Luncheon being held Thursday 22 August at The Esplanade Hotel Fremantle by Rydges – Island Suite.

Fremantle Mayor, Dr Brad Pettitt will provide an update on the key initiatives the City has taken to revitalise Fremantle Luncheon registrations open at 11.45 am for a 12 noon start. Cost is $55 for the public and $50 for chamber members. Register on the RSVP page.

Dough Thompson Congratulations Cr Doug Thompson!

A big congratulations to Cr Doug Thompson who was awarded with the West Australian Local Government Association Eminent Award this week. Cr Thompson won the award after being recognised for his long-standing community work including his work with the homeless and indigenous communities.
