Highly regarded worldwide and one of Western Australia's iconic events, the Rottnest Channel Swim is a 19.7km open water swim from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island. Whether competing as a solo, duo or team, the Rottnest Channel Swim is a 'team' event with all swimmers surrounded by a support network of paddlers, boat skippers and crew. The event, managed by the Rottnest Channel Swim Association, is held in February of each year and is Rottnest Island's biggest day.

Support Crew Info Session

If you're a first time skipper, paddler or support crew in the 2019 Rottnest Channel Swim, the Support Crew Info Session will help you get prepared for an epic, safe and successful event!

This free session covers everything from what to expect on swim day, helpful tips and tricks from experienced skippers and paddlers, and will also give you an opportunity to ask questions which you won't have at other briefings.

Of course, if you have supported the event before, or you're a swimmer, you're more than welcome to attend too!

The session will he held on Saturday, 2 February 2019 following the Metro Safety Briefing in the Main Arena at HBF Stadium from 4.15pm.

Qualifying swims for Soloists

If you've registered to be a Solo in 2019, you must provide evidence that you're fit and able to undertake the 19.7km crossing to Rottnest. There are two ways solo swimmers can do this:

  1. By having completed a successful Solo crossing of the Rottnest Channel in the past two years.
  2. Completing a formal 10km open water swim in less than 4 hours and 15 minutes between 1 November 2018 and 1 February 2019.

Here are the upcoming 10km qualifying events in WA:

  • Saturday, 24 November 2018 – OWS 10km – Coogee
  • Saturday, 15 December 2018 – Christmas 10km – Coogee Beach (paddler sanctioned)
  • Saturday, 22 December 2018 – OWS 10km State Championships - Champion Lakes
  • Saturday, 29 December 2018 – OWS 10km – Mullaloo
  • Saturday, 26 January 2019 – OWS 10km - Sorrento

For more information on these and alternative interstate qualifying opportunities, visit our Solo Qualifying Swim page here.

Please note that once you have successfully completed your qualifying swim, you will need to log back into the registration system and update your qualification details. This needs to be completed prior to 1 February 2019 or you may lose your spot in the 2019 Event.

A message from the Department of Transport (Marine)

Please be aware that the Department of Transport (Marine) defines a domestic commercial vessel (DCV) as one that is for use in connection with a commercial, governmental or research activity.

Recreational vessels that are hired or hired out (then defined as a DCV) are in direct violation of the Marine Safety (Domestic Commercial Vessel) National Law Act 2012 and there are significant financial penalties, with a minimum fine in excess of $2,000 for any contravention of the Act.

If you are looking to hire a vessel, please make sure it complies with the DoT's definition of a Domestic Commercial Vessel otherwise it may result in the vessel being prohibited from operation immediately (withdrawn from the swim), along with a breach report forwarded to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

If you would like more information on the definition of a recreational vessel or tips on finding a support boat, please visit our Support Crew page on our website.

Additional merchandise

Interested in supporting an international or interstate team?

Ahead of the 2019 Event, the RCSA is seeking expressions of interest for skippers and support crew who would like to assist with an international or interstate solo, duo or team.

As the Rottnest Channel Swim grows every year, we are grateful to attract a number of international and interstate swimmers who wish to join you as you make the annual crossing to Rottnest. All entrants are required to have a support boat for the swim and solos who have registered to share a boat must have a paddler each for swimmer safety.

We get how difficult it can be to find a support crew and even more so for our distant swimming community. If you are interested in helping an international or interstate swimmer, please contact query@rottnestchannelswim.com.au and we will connect you with those looking for a support boat and crew.

If you are still looking for a skipper and support crew yourself, we encourage you to post on our RCSA Forum or Facebook page.

Love to volunteer on water for the Rottnest Channel Swim? How about being a Race Official!

Each year, the Rottnest Channel Swim has a crew of amazing volunteer race officials and skippers for the duration of the Event, to assist in checking participant and boat compliance, as well as swimmers meeting cut-off times. This is all to ensure everyone has a safe, courteous and successful crossing to Rottnest Island.

With the fleet of swimmers and support boats at capacity again, the Rottnest Channel Swim Association is seeking additional Race Official boats and personnel to assist on race day. In return, the RCSA will provide:

  • A fuel allowance up to $500 per vessel
  • All day food and water packages for race officials and skippers
  • Official Event t-shirts for race officials and skippers

We are now taking expressions of interest, so if you think this is something you'd be interested in or would like to know more about, please contact info@rottnestchannelswim.com.au.
