Whether competing as a solo, duo or team, the Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim is a 'team' event with all swimmers surrounded by a support network of paddlers, boat skippers and crew. The event, managed by the Rottnest Channel Swim Association, is held in February of each year and is Rottnest Island's biggest day.

Rotto Swim Paddler Course

Would you love for a family member or friend to be your paddler, but you're not sure they have the skills? Problem solved…

Canoeing WA is holding a new course that is specifically designed for new or inexperienced paddlers who want to support you in the Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim. It will be held on Sunday, 31 January 2016 and the morning session will run through the basics of paddle strokes, tips and what to expect on event day.

The session will cost $40 and will run for 4 hours (start time TBC). If you are interested, please register your EOI by emailing info@rottnestchannelswim.com.au. Paddlers are required to bring their own equipment to the session.

Support Crew Info Night

Ahead of the 2016 Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim, we are holding a free Support Crew Info Night on Wednesday, 20 January 2016. This event has been designed for first time skippers and support crew who are looking for some insight into what to expect on swim day, and some tips and tricks to ensure a safe and successful crossing. Of course, if you have supported the event before, you are still welcome to attend!

There will be representatives from Fremantle Sailing Club, Fremantle Volunteers Sea Rescue Group and Department of Transport (Marine Safety), as well as stories from experienced Rotto Swim paddlers and skippers.

Additionally, there will be an opportunity for support boats to receive a boat inspection in the Fremantle Sailing Club carpark for a $10 donation to the Fremantle Volunteer Sea Rescue Group. If you are interested in booking a boat inspection or attending the info night, please register your EOI by emailing info@rottnestchannelswim.com.au.

The RCSA would also like to remind everyone to please confirm that all swimmer and support crew details are correct.

The team captain is able to update all registration information through their My Events page or they can visit our FAQ page for the link. We will be emailing safety information and important reminders to all support skippers, so please ensure you have entered your support crew's email addresses into the online registration system.

All swimmer and skipper names will be published in the Year Book from details listed in the online registration system as at Sunday, 3 January 2016.

Understand the Risks of Hypothermia

Did you know that up to 40% of solo swimmers who swim to Rottnest are at risk of developing a percentage of hypothermia? Hypothermia is a significant medical risk of mass participation long-distance open water swimming and a research document of the same name was written by Professor Ian Rogers following an observational study he conducted of solo swimmers in the 2006 Rottnest Channel Swim.

Thanks to Professor Ian Rogers, we have a video that outlines mild and severe symptoms that can be recognised by support crew as well as preventative actions that you can undertake for your 2016 Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim. Additionally, you can hear from successful soloist, John Muir, who shares his personal experience of having hypothermia and other medical implications.

The RCSA strongly urges all swimmers, but particularly solos, to watch the videos to understand the risks associated with hypothermia as becoming hypothermic can be life threatening.
