Get ready for the Saturday Briefing!
Highly regarded worldwide and one of Western Australia's iconic events, the Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim is a 19.7km open water swim from Cottesloe Beach to Rottnest Island. Whether competing as a solo, duo or team, the Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim is a 'team' event with all swimmers surrounded by a support network of paddlers, boat skippers and crew. The event, managed by the Rottnest Channel Swim Association, is held in February of each year and is Rottnest Island's biggest day.
The 2017 Briefing has moved to Saturday, 4 February 2017

A quick reminder that the Metro Safety Briefing will be held on Saturday, 4 February 2017 in the Main Arena at HBF Stadium, (Stephenson Avenue, Mount Claremont) commencing at 4pm. But first, here are the details you need to know:

  • Start time: The briefing will commence at 4pm sharp. Late-comers will be allowed into the venue at non-disruptive intervals via the upper doors. As per previous years, we shut the doors once the briefing starts so make sure to come down early.
  • Pre-briefing activities: from 3pm there will be entertainment from our sponsors and Event helpers on the grassed area out the front of HBF Stadium. We will have music and icy poles from hit92.9, a sausage sizzle from Surf Life Saving WA and the Department of Transport (Marine Safety) will also be there to for any skipper questions. We encourage you to come down early and for the ultimate #rottoswim afternoon!
  • Skipper attendance: We recommend strongly that your skipper attends the briefing as they are ultimately responsible for your wellbeing during your crossing. The 2017 briefing video will also be available online after the briefing for those who cannot attend the afternoon.
  • Race pack collection: Race packs contain your race caps, stickers, protocols and t-shirts. These are available for collection after the briefing. Please note that race packs cannot be collected without a representative from the team attending a briefing. Race packs WILL NOT be able to be collected from the RCSA office.
  • T-shirts: If you missed out on ordering additional t-shirts this year or would like more (great gifts for your support crew!), these will also be available for purchase before and after the safety briefing.
  • Wave categories: Once your race number has been allocated to your team you are free to pass on your boat and paddler stickers to your support crew ready for the big day (unlike previous years, your race number is now fixed even if you change categories). Solo wave start times will be advised via email.
  • Parking and Transportation: Parking is limited at HBF Stadium and it can become congested. It is important to allow extra time to find a parking spot and for traffic delays (which are inevitable with everyone arriving for the same event). It is recommended that you ride your bike, or carpool. If you need to drive, please consider using the alternative entrance into the stadium, via McGillivray Road.

We hope you enjoy the new briefing date and we can't wait to see you there!

Registration changes

We understand that circumstances change and you may need to replace a swimmer or update your skipper or support boat details.

Changes to your entry can be made online via your Active.com account until 5pm on Wednesday, 22 February 2017. After this time, the RCSA will not accept any changes to your registration. All registration details must be true and correct by this time or you will not be permitted to enter the water on race day. We encourage team captains to ensure you have updated your skipper information via your Active.com account and that all team members have successfully added themselves to your team. For the seven easy steps on how team members can join your team, visit question 9 on our Registration FAQ page and question 11 for how to change a swimmer.

Please note that the full team of 4 must be registered and ready to race before 5pm on Wednesday, 22 February to be able to participate in the Event. Team captains - please make sure your team is correctly in the system and all support crew information is up to date for a seamless week in the lead up to Event day. This can be done via your Active.com account or by checking with your team mates.

After the party is the after party!

The RCSA has been working hard to make the 2017 Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim better every year! For 2017, we have a local artist lined up who will be performing at the finish line enclosure after the solo photo and presentations. The gig will be family friendly and has been designed to provide an alternative location to help you celebrate your 2017 Rotto Swim!

 Skippers' questionnaire

All skippers for the 2017 Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim must complete an online questionnaire to be able to participate in the event.

This year, skippers have from after the Event Briefing until 5.00pm on Wednesday, 22 February 2017 to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire will feature a series of safety based questions that are designed to ensure the rules and regulations of the event are understood.

While we will be sending your skipper this information as well, please give your skipper a gentle reminder to complete this questionnaire (and pass on your race number too please!).

Understand the risk of hypothermia

Did you know that up to 40% of solo swimmers who swim to Rottnest are at risk of developing a level of hypothermia? Hypothermia is a significant medical risk of mass participation long-distance open water swimming and a research document of the same name was written by Professor Ian Rogers following an observational study he conducted of solo swimmers in the 2006 Rottnest Channel Swim.

Thanks to Professor Ian Rogers, we have a video that outlines mild and severe symptoms that can be recognised by support crew as well as preventative actions that you can undertake for your 2017 Karma Resorts Rottnest Channel Swim. Additionally, you can hear from successful soloist, John Muir, who shares his personal experience of having hypothermia and other medical implications.

The RCSA strongly urges all swimmers, but particularly solos, to watch the videos to understand the risks associated with hypothermia as becoming hypothermic can be life threatening.
