Port city 'purplification' begins
The City of Fremantle is gearing up for a massive September, with AFL finals fever already taking hold of the port city ahead of the Fremantle Dockers' premiership campaign which starts against the Sydney Swans this weekend.
Fremantle's famous 'cappuccino strip' (South Terrace/Market Street) has already started being 'purplified', with painting of the median strip taking place over the weekend. Social media has gone into overdrive and over the next few days the transformation of the city centre with ramp up, with dozens of 'GO FREO' banners and road stencils going up around the city with support from media partners Evoke Media, Channel 7 and The West Australian. Fremantle becomes joint first 'One Planet Council' in Australia
The City of Fremantle is one of only two local governments in Australia, and only the fourth in the world, to be officially certified as a One Planet Council, recognition which is reserved for exemplary regions around the globe who are leading the charge on sustainable living.
One Planet Living is an internationally recognised benchmark for sustainability. It provides a framework and plan of action for projects and organisations to make it easy, attractive and affordable for people to lead happy and healthy lives within Earth's finite resources - one planet's worth of resources. PARK(ing) Day Freo 2014
Want a free parking bay in Fremantle on Friday 19 September? Want to park your crazy ideas there instead of a boring old car?
The City of Fremantle & Ecoscape present PARK(ing) Day Freo 2014 - an annual open-source global event where citizens, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into "PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places.
The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!

Junk and whitegoods collection
Area A (Fremantle, North Fremantle, O'Connor and White Gum Valley) green waste will be collected on Monday 8 September and Area B (Beaconsfield, Hilton and Samson) will be collected on Monday 22 September.

Join the Mayors for Peace
This September the City will host WA's first Mayors for Peace conference which will be open to the public.
Hiroshima survivor Junko Morimito will join us at this special event to describe her experience as a 13 year old in Hiroshima when the atomic bomb went off. Hear her inspiring story at the Fremantle Town Hall on Monday 22 September from 1.00-3.00 pm.
Before the conference everyone is invited to the Fremantle Peace Walk which will take place on International Peace Day - Sunday 21 September 2014.
Come on down to Bather's Beach at 10.00 am for a walk to Peace Grove followed by BYO picnic, live music and special talks.
The City of Fremantle joined Mayors for Peace around a decade ago as part of a push from cities around the world to work to make sure nuclear disarmament is front and centre of the global agenda.

Fremantle Fun Run 2014
Get your racing shoes on as the Fremantle Fun Run is back again! Choose between a 5km or 10km run that will take you through the beautiful streets of this port city and support the Royal Flying Doctor Service.

Short story competition 2014
The City's positive ageing program is kicking off the 2014 Fremantle, My Place Short Story Competition. This competition invites Fremantle people aged 55 years and older to submit a piece of writing that tells a tale about Fremantle.
Prizes will be awarded at a morning tea at Fremantle Library, 10.00 am on Friday 14 November.
It's a great excuse to get writing with generous prizes up for grabs including a $200 gift voucher for first place, a $100 gift voucher for second place and two $50 gift vouchers for highly commended stories.

100 long years have passed since 849 Fremantle soldiers left our shores and never came home after WW1. We're searching for historical documents, photos, postcards, medals or memoires related to Fremantle and WW1 to kick-off ANZAC centenary commemorations. We've been striving to be recognised as a unique city of cultural and economic significance.
A half-yearly update on the City's major projects is now available as part of the City of Fremantle Strategic Plan 2010–15.

Upcoming road closures
Fremantle Fun Run
Sunday 14 September, 8.00–10.00 am. Marine Terrace (between Cliff Street and Capo d'Orlando Drive) and Mews Road (between Capo d'Orlando Drive and South Mole).
Maria SS Del Tindari
Sunday 14 September, 2.00–4.00 pm. Adelaide Street, Queen, Cantonment Street, Market Street, High Street and Collie Street.
The Water Corporation night works
Monday 15 September, 8.00 pm–6.00 am. Pioneer Reserve at the corner of Philimore Street and Market Street.
The works involve horizontal drilling under Market Street which will include removal of sections from the footpath either side of the road. Vehicle and pedestrian traffic management and exclusion zones will be in place while the works are being undertaken. Footpath and infrastructure reinstatements will be completed by the contractors allowing usual footpath and roads access for the following day.

The plan proposes to redevelop land bounded by Swanbourne Street (to the west), Knutsford Street (to the north), Amherst Street (to the east) and Stevens Reserve (to the south).Comments close Tuesday 23 September
Scheme amendment 61
The City is seeking to amend its local planning scheme text to include:
- Minor revision of the existing development controls for the city centre sits of Sub Area 1.3.2
- Two new sites, 135 High Street Mall (lot 381) and 35 William Street (lot 101), Fremantle into Sub Area 1.3.2.
Comments close Monday 13 October.

Little Big Shots at Fremantle Arts Centre
Little Big Shots, Australia's premier film festival for kids, is coming to Fremantle Arts Centre this October school holidays! An inspiring, hand-picked selection of leading international and Australian kids films, LBS includes short animations and live action films for all ages which will be screened outdoors in FAC's idyllic Inner Courtyard from Tuesday 7 to Thursday 9 October at 9.30 am, 10.30 am and 11.30 am.
Founded in Melbourne in 2004, LBS now holds festivals right around Australia. Each session is less than an hour, showing up to 12 short films designed for particular age groups between 2-15 years.
